Shannon's Hope Camp is a local organization whose mission is to "provide a safe group environment to support and empower children, teens and their families grieving a death."

I've been lucky enough to have had several opportunities to lead groups at Shannon's Hope Camp and participate in other events with Bridges of Hope. Each time I leave Shannon's Hope Camp, I can't help but reflect on the incredible resilience and strength of the campers I've met. There's often this misconception that these camps solely revolve around grief and sadness, but in reality, they're so much more than that. While we do address loss and navigate through difficult emotions connected to grief, there's also an abundance of joy and camaraderie to be found. From engaging in creative activities like art, music, mindfulness practices and dancing to simply enjoying the outdoors, Shannon's Hope Camp provides a space where campers can both express themselves and connect with others who understand what they are going through. Being able to support children, teenagers, and families during their journey through grief has truly been an honor for me.

In an effort to share information about this wonderful resource and support the building of a grief-sensitive community, I have asked Lauren Clarke, LISW, CT, to share a bit about Shannon's Hope Camp, as it is quickly approaching- March 9th and 10th 2024.

Shannon's Hope Camp is a place where campers from all around the Lowcountry gather twice a year for a weekend of learning, growth, and sharing about their grief. Nestled on Seabrook Island, this beautiful retreat offers a space for youth to come together, connect with others who understand their experiences, and find solace in nature.

At Shannon's Hope Camp, campers share a common bond—they are grieving the loss of someone they care about. Whether it's a parent, sibling, or close friend, each camper finds understanding and support from peers who are going through similar challenges. Over the years, the camp has served thousands of youth, providing them with the tools and resources to navigate their grief journey.

One of the transformative activities at Shannon's Hope Camp is the Letting Go Letter. Campers have the opportunity to release their regrets, express their feelings, or write a letter to their loved one on dissolvable paper. They then send these letters into the roaring sounds of the ocean, symbolizing the process of letting go and finding peace.

Throughout the weekend, campers engage in workshops, bonding activities, and small group discussions to learn new coping skills and build connections. Many campers arrive feeling nervous but leave with newfound friendships and a sense of belonging. For some, it's their first time meeting another person who is also missing a parent or loved one, which helps normalize their experience and expand their support network.

Campers are paired with volunteer buddies  who dedicate their weekends to making a lasting impact on a child or teen. They stay in beachfront cabins, soak in the ocean air, and participate in activities like bonfires, dance circles, and candle lighting ceremonies. The candle lighting ceremony, in particular, is a poignant moment where campers light candles in memory of their loved ones, symbolizing the light they still carry in their hearts.

Our next camp is scheduled for March 9th and 10th, and it's open to ages 7-17. Best of all, it's offered free of charge. If you or someone you know could benefit from this empowering experience, please visit www.shannonshopecamp.org  to register. Scroll to the bottom of the page for registration details.

As the Program Director of Shannon's Hope Camp, I am continually amazed by the resilience, joy, and smiles that emerge from a grief camp. The campers not only find healing for themselves but also inspire and uplift everyone around them. Join us for an unforgettable weekend of connection, growth, and hope.

We look forward to welcoming you to Shannon's Hope Camp!
